When the latest edition of The Bachelor premiered on Monday night with Jason Mesnick as the latest man looking for a mate, I couldn't help but think about season's past. Well, really one season in particular--The Bachelor: Officer and a Gentleman--when Lieutenant Andy Baldwin captured women's hearts across the country. And unlike many others tuning into the show, I have to say it wasn't for Baldwin's good looks that had me interested, but his interest in triathlon.
Baldwin is not only a doctor with the U.S. Navy, but he's also an accomplished triathlete, competing in the Ironman World Championships five times. He first competed at Kona in 2002, then returned 2004 to 2007. If you can track down the NBC broadcast of the 2007 event, you can catch a clip of Baldwin racing. He's fast too--oftentimes completing the grueling event in under 10 hours.
Currently, Baldwin's website says he's running the Miami Marathon at the end of January to raise money for the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. And he still stays active with triathlons and other athletic pursuits, like winning the Nautica Malibu Triathlon in September (the same one that J-Lo competed in). Wikipedia offers a pretty in-depth look at Baldwin's sports and humanitarian resume for more details.
Now why is it that Tessa dumped Baldwin? I don't know...I would have figured out a way to make it work. Especially now that Baldwin was dubbed one of the hottest bachelors of 2008 in People magazine.
As for this season of The Bachelor, I am wondering if any of the girls have athletic resumes. While it might not be as important this season, I always think about that to feed my own curiosity. Apparently Megan is a lacrosse coach, but are there any runners or triathletes out there? Posted by Kate
